An End To An Amazing Class

And I’ve done it. I’ve made it through CS108! I’m glad I took this class, and I’m quite proud of all the games I’ve created. This class has been a lot of fun, and I’ve learned to appreciate the art of games even moreso. While there wasn’t an opportunity to create multiple prototypes for a single game, having gone through two prototypes has made me appreciate those who have created several dozen to create their “perfect game.”

I had the most difficulty creating a card game, and now I look at games like Big Two (A Chinese card game), Poker, and Marriage (A Nepali card game) with more appreciation and fascination.

I have to commend James for designing a great class and one that seemed to transition into an online workflow quite seamlessly. The announcements paired with lecture videos and additional links are really helpful and organized. As a suggestion, I would organize them into weekly modules. I would occasionally struggle to find a specific page for Unity tutorials. The lecture videos were short and easy to follow. Reading the book was fun too and I found the articles to be interesting and quite informative. Most times, it felt like I wasn’t reading or studying for a class, but rather to fill my own curiosity and knowledge.

I think my favorite aspect of the class was to be able to interact with classmates and play their games and write feedback. The critique system that utilized the discussions and breakout rooms was extremely helpful. I felt that each prototype had a significantly large change. Pro-Tip for students, present in the earlier slots/days because you get to improve the game before the deadline! I received a lot of helpful feedback and improved the game tremendously within two days!

I got to be inspired by other games and just be in awe of the artists. I had my struggles programming, but I cannot thank the artists I worked with enough. Real heroes for this class.

Below is a screenshot of the last game I created for this class. When the lockdown and quarantine first begun, I would play virtual escape rooms with friends. I was later inspired to create one of my own and the final project was my opportunity to do so. I’m quite pleased with this game, and I hope to create more in the future. c:
